Germinating Cannabis Seeds

Germinating cannabis seeds is the crucial first step in cannabis cultivation. Proper germination determines the health of the seedling and lays the foundation for strong vegetative growth and a successful harvest.

  1. Preparing the seeds

Choose fresh, quality seeds from a trusted source.

Check the seeds for hardness and color: ripe seeds are brown, hard and not brittle.

Store seeds in a cool, dark, dry place until use.

  1. Methods of germination

a. Paper towel method

Place seeds between damp, but not soaked, paper towels.

Place between two plates or in a sealed container to retain moisture.

Keep the temperature around 20–25°C.

After 2–7 days, the seeds should germinate with a 1–2 cm rootlet.

b. Directly in substrate

Plant seeds 0.5–1 cm deep in moist soil or coco coir medium.

Cover lightly with a thin layer of substrate.

Keep the medium moist and warm.

Seeds will emerge after a few days to a week.

c. Water method

Place seeds in lukewarm water for 12–24 hours.

As soon as they swell and show roots, plant them directly in substrate.

Do not leave in water for more than 48 hours to avoid oxygen deficiency.

  1. Optimal conditions

Temperature: 20–25°C

Humidity: High but not soaking wet, 70–90% relative humidity

Light: Indirect light is sufficient; direct light can burn young seedlings

Tip: A heat mat and transparent growing hood can improve germination conditions.

  1. Common mistakes

Sowing too deep → seedling cannot emerge through the substrate.

Too wet substrate → root rot and mold formation.

Too dry → seeds dry out and do not germinate.

Direct bright light → burn young seedlings.

  1. After germination

Once the root has developed, place the seed in the substrate with the root facing down.

Keep the medium moist and provide indirect light until the seedling has two true leaves.

Avoid overwatering and stress during the first few weeks.
