After weeks or even months of careful cultivation, there's nothing worse than seeing your cannabis spoil or lose its potency. Proper drying and storage are therefore just as important as the growing itself. In this article, we explain how to properly store cannabis to preserve its flavor, aroma, and potency for as long as possible.
🍁 Why proper storage is important
Cannabis is a natural product that is sensitive to light, air, moisture, and temperature. Without the right conditions:
it loses its THC (the substance that produces psychoactive effects),
the terpenes (the scent and flavor molecules) evaporate,
and mold or dehydration may occur.
With the right storage method, you can keep cannabis fresh for 6 months to even 1 year — without any loss of quality.
🏺 The basics of good storage
- Store in an airtight and light-proof container
Use glass jars with airtight lids (such as Mason jars). Plastic bags allow air and odors to escape and are therefore less suitable.
Avoid light: Store jars in a dark cupboard or box. UV light breaks down THC and terpenes.
- The right temperature
The ideal storage temperature is between 18°C and 22°C.
Too warm: terpenes evaporate and mold risk increases.
Too cold: trichomes (the resin crystals) can become brittle.
- Humidity in balance
A humidity of 55–62% is ideal.
Too dry (<50%): Cannabis loses flavor and burns faster.
Too humid (>65%): risk of mould formation.
If necessary, use moisture-regulating sachets (such as Boveda or Integra Boost) in the pot.
🌸 Extra storage tips
🔒 Don't open too often
Every time you open the jar, air and moisture get inside. So only open your stash when necessary.
🌬️ No oxygen, no oxidation
Oxidation is THC's biggest enemy. Therefore, it's important to seal the jars tightly. Some experts use vacuum sealers or nitrogen seals to completely remove oxygen—especially during long-term storage.
🧊 Store in the refrigerator or freezer?
Refrigerator: Only suitable if the temperature remains stable and no condensation occurs.
Freezer: Possible, but risky. Trichomes can break. If you choose this option, only use airtight, moisture-proof containers.
🌼 Recognizing cannabis that has gone bad
Look for the following signs of poor storage:
Mold: White or gray fluff — throw it away immediately!
Scent loss: If the scent becomes bland or musty, the terpenes have broken down.
Brittle or dusty: Too dry — burns quickly and tastes sharp.
Dark discoloration: THC has been oxidized, effect reduced.
💨 Small stock, great freshness
Want to get the most out of your cannabis? Store a small amount in a separate container for daily use, and keep the rest tightly sealed. This way, your large stash stays fresh and fragrant for longer.
