Drying cannabis

After weeks of careful cultivation, the most important moment arrives: drying your cannabis. Proper drying is crucial to preserve the THC, CBD, and terpenes, and to prevent mold and spoilage. Drying too quickly affects the flavor; drying too slowly increases the risk of mold.

🌱 Why drying is important

Freshly harvested cannabis contains a lot of water: approximately 75–80% of its weight is moisture. Without drying:

Does the plant lose strength and flavor,

Is there a high risk of mold and rot,

The weed burns poorly and hard.

By drying cannabis slowly and in a controlled manner, you preserve the aromas and potency of the buds.

🏺 Preparing the buds

Trimming: Remove large fan leaves from the buds. Small sugar leaves can be left on to protect the buds during drying.

Sorting: Larger buds dry slower than smaller ones. Sort by size to ensure even drying.

Don't wash: Cannabis doesn't need to be washed unless dirt or pesticides are present. Water can promote mold.

🌬️ Drying methods

  1. Hang to dry

Cut the stems off the buds and hang them upside down from a rack or wire.

Make sure the tops do not touch each other.

Keep the room dark, well ventilated and around 18–22 °C.

Ideal humidity: 45–55%.

  1. Rack drying

Place buds on a drying rack lined with mesh.

Turn them daily for even drying.

Handy for small quantities or when hanging space is limited.

  1. Use of dryers

For larger quantities, there are special drying cabinets with controlled temperature and ventilation.

Advantage: constant conditions, less chance of mold.

⏱️ How long does drying take?

On average 7–14 days.

The buds are ready when the stems break instead of bending, and the sugar leaves feel dry.

Drying too quickly (at >25°C or too low humidity) affects the taste and aroma.

🌸 Curing: the key to quality

After drying, curing is important: the slow ripening of the buds in closed jars.

Place the dry buds in airtight glass jars.

Open the jars 1–2 times a day the first week to remove moisture and CO₂.

After that, once a week for 2–4 weeks is sufficient.

Curing improves taste, smell, effect and smoke quality.

⚠️ Common mistakes

Drying too quickly: causes hard, brittle buds and loss of terpenes.

Drying too slowly: increases the risk of mold and rot.

Direct sunlight: breaks down THC and fades color.

Overcrowded drying room: limited air circulation leads to mold.

🌿 Tips for optimal results

Use a thermometer and hygrometer in the drying room.

Ventilate carefully: no strong winds on the peaks.

Hang or lay the buds loosely so that air can circulate everywhere.

Store dried and cured cannabis in dark, cool, airtight jars.
